Course Description
Junior ROTC is a citizenship and leadership development course that incorporates weekly wear of the US Army uniform. Classes are organized under cadet leadership and modeled on an Army maneuver battalion, with ranks assigned more senior cadets who supervise more junior cadets in mastering course material. Extracurricular teams for competition with other JROTC programs include the rifle team, which shoots the Daisy .227 air rifle; the drill team, which works on drill and marching; the Color Guard, which presents the national and Navajo Nation colors at special events and in competition; and the Raiders, who compete in outdoors-type activities such as orienteering, physical conditioning and rappelling.
Course Outline
At least once a week (usually Mondays) cadets practice marching and close-order drill; Wednesdays they stand inspection in uniform, during which they are individually questioned (and graded) on citizenship and JROTC-program knowledge; and Fridays they do calisthenics and a one-mile run to maintain physical conditioning. Additional to these activities are citizenship classes, leadership development instruction, and coursework in personal finances, first aid, the US Constitution, US and Arizona politics, map reading, and other topics that develop a patriotic understanding of the United States and enhance the student’s ability to prosper in American society.
