Course Description
In this course students will explore the different themes of American literature. There are six main areas of concentration: Encounters and Foundations to 1800, American Romanticism: 1800-1860, American Masters: Whitman and Dickinson, The Rise of Realism: The Civil War to 1914, The Moderns: 1914-1939, and Contemporary Literature: 1939 to Present. In each area students will be asked to read and respond to the concentration by writing essays that focus on their interaction with the works from that particular time frame. Students will also practice test taking and essay writing skills that will help them demonstrate proficiency for college readiness.
