Course Description
Fall semester: Students will concentrate on the Reading Process and Comprehending Literary Text. We will learn and use the Writing Process (Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, & Publishing) to develop a Personal Narrative, Literary Response Paper and Business Letter. We will work on the 6 Traits of Writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. We will read varies short stories and literature to practice and develop reading skills. We will do daily writing exercises so come prepared to write and share your thoughts on various subjects. All writing projects are graded on the 6 Traits Rubric. In addition, this course includes daily reading and free-writing warm ups with Quickwrites, practice various reading strategies using various types of reading material such as Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Flocabulary, Empower3000.com, The Navajo Times Newspaper, SRA’s, Scholastic Read Alouds, and Sprint Books just to name a few. We will do a whole class project with A Christmas Carol where students will work in Literature Circles.
Spring semester: Students will concentrate on Functional, Expository and Persuasive Text. We will continue to use the Writing Process (Pre-Writing, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, & Publishing) to develop a Business Letter, How-to-Paper, Persuasive Essay and a Research Paper. We will continue to work with the 6 Traits: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. We will read and analyze various Functional Documents and apply various reading strategies. We will read and comprehend various Persuasive Essays and apply persuasive techniques learned in an essay. We will end the semester conducting and writing a Research Paper that will apply all writing strategies and techniques learned throughout the school year. In addition, we will continue to using the following reading resources Flocabulary, Empower3000.com, The Navajo Times Newspaper, SRA’s, Scholastic Read Alouds, and Sprint Books improve reading skills.
